Royal Recommendations from the Knitting Princess - May

Hello! I'm sorry May's post is a little late. My project took longer than anticipated, and I spent time with friends and family during the holiday weekend instead of working on the project the whole time, and then naps happened after long days. I'm not sure why I fought taking naps as a kid, but as an adult, I love them them. Anyway, that's why you're not getting this post on Memorial Day like I had planned. I had also mentioned to a few people that I might have to pick colors for my recommendation that aren't pink and green, and that didn't happen either.

In my opinion, Summer is the season to really celebrate kids and let them be kids. Summer can be for adults too, but most of us have to work, and we don't get the whole season off to recharge. When I went looking for a project for this month, I really wanted to do another kid related something and was given the perfect opportunity through my church. This year they're doing a scuba theme for vacation Bible school. And although I can't participate during that time because of other commitments, I asked if I could help by making them a stuffed animal as a prize. They said yes, and sent me some pictures of the "Bible Buddies" that would be helping the kids learn throught the week, and I knew, that if I made nothing else, I wanted to make an octopus. I wanted it to be big, but I wasn't sure how big, so just to be safe I bought 4 skeins of yarn and went to work!

I adapted the "Octopus Tea Cosy" pattern by Susan Cowper that I found on Ravelry, because I liked her knitted octopus the best, and soon discovered I needed more yarn. I started with US size 9 needles and Premier's Parfait Chunky in color "Bubblegum" and decided that I would have to go down a few needle sizes so that there wouldn't be holes in the octopus, or double the yarn, and make the octopus huge. As this was a prize for a kid, I picked option 2. Eighteen skeins of yarn later (10 in Bubblegum, 8 in Party Pink), and Octavia was done!

I'm really pleased with how she turned out, and hope some kid will love bringing her home. Octavia the Octopus will be on display in the studio through Saturday June 1st, and then she'll be moving on to her new home. In the meantime, come and say hi, and pick up this month's Royal Recommendation to make your own octopus or something else. Premier's Parfait Chunky in Bubblegum, and Parfait Chunky Pom Pom in Party Pink will be 10% off until June 23rd, and I should have a new recommendation to you the next day. Hope you have fun stitching, and I can't wait to see what you make with your yarn!
